Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante: History, Dates, and Events 2025

The San Juan festivals, also known as San Juan Night, are an iconic event in Alicante celebrated annually between June 20th and 24th. These festivals combine Christian traditions marking the birth of John the Baptist with ancient pagan festivities related to the summer solstice. Officially recognized in 1928, the festivities share many similarities with Valencia’s Fallas, including parades, fireworks, burning of figures, and religious ceremonies. The most iconic event takes place on the night of June 24th, where around 90 bonfires are lit throughout the city to cheers and applause.

The History of the San Juan Festivals

Although the San Juan bonfires are today a hallmark of Alicante, their origins can be traced back to ancient farming communities that viewed fire as a symbol of purification. Similar traditions exist in many cultures, from Portugal and Norway to countries in Latin America.

In 1928, the Catanian José María Py convinced Alicante’s city council that the bonfires could become a tourist attraction. Thus, the festival was officially established with parades, cultural events, and the selection of Belleza del Fuego (Beauty of the Fire), the festival’s queen. The significance of the festival quickly grew, and in 1983 it was declared a National Tourist Event and in 2014 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

When Do the San Juan Festivals Take Place in Alicante?

Although the festivities officially run from June 20th to 24th, preparations begin as early as January with the selection of candidates for Belleza del Fuego in each neighborhood. In May, the Exposición del Ninot exhibition opens, where the figures to be burned during “la cremà” are displayed. Other highlights include the gallashow for the selection of Belleza del Fuego and Indulto del Ninot, where a figure escapes the flames.

On June 19th, each neighborhood builds their bonfire and sets up their barraca, an enclosed area with tables, a stage, and a bar where locals and visitors can enjoy the festivities.
